Itinerary: 14th – 17th May 2012

Day 1 – May 14 (Dar es Salaam): We kick off at the Whitesands Beach Resort in Dar es Salaam at 9 am for a hash run along the beach and the mainland. Hash circle and down downs followed by lunch t 12. At 2 pm, depart to the dock and catch the luxury ferry cruise to Zanzibar. Enjoy the ride, and party on in good hash style in the ferry with music and dancing.

Dar es Salaam is Tanzania’s commercial heart and rivals Nairobi as East Africa’s largest city. Its known for its original East African music. The town was founded in 1862 when it was chosen by Zanzibar’s sultan as the site of his summer palace.

Day 2 – May 15 (Zanzibar): We spend the night on Zanzibar island at the Diamond Neptune beach resort. Enjoy the early evening at the beach before dinner. After dinner spend the evening partying and dancing, as wine, beer and music will flow for free.

Enjoy the early morning sunrise with a swim in the pool or the ocean followed by breakfast at this beautiful resort famed as the best beach in Tanzania. After breakfast you have some leisure time before the hash, down downs and lunch.

After lunch you can take a historic spice tour of Zanzibar in the afternoon or wander the streets of the Old Town. Dinner and dancing till dawn will follow.

Zanzibar is full of romance and history, and contains a great blend of Indian, Arabian, African and European culture.

The islands beaches are some of the most beautiful in the world. Old Stone Town is surrounded on three sides by the sea, and forms a tangled maze of cobbled alleyways, right out of 1001 Arabian nights. The architecture is remarkable, with overhanging verandas, and Indian buildings with ornate balconies, alternating with bustling oriental bazaars. The rest of the island is famous for its various spice plantations and multi-faceted deep Swahili (Afro-Arab) culture. Zanzibar was the capital of the Oman Sultan for hundreds of years. Now, it is part of Tanzania, but retains some political autonomy.

Day 3 – May 16 (Pemba and Tanga): Early morning swim in the ocean or the pool followed by breakfast and on on to another ferry party as followed we cruise past local fishermen on the way to Pemba. Hash run in Pemba followed by circle and a Swahili seafood barbecue.

Pemba is the smaller sister of Zanzibar, separated from the larger island by only 50 km of water. Few tourists ever make the trip to Pemba, but those who do are rarely disappointed. Pemba is relatively undiscovered, its coast lined with mangroves, it has long been renowned for voodoo and traditional healers. Pemba is also famed for its extensive clove plantations. While the spices are being dried the exotic aroma is so strong it even reaches Zanzibar!

After lunch, back to the boat for a cruise to Tanga. Party all night at the Tanga beach resort with plenty of beer and wine until dawn.

Tanga is Tanzania’s second largest seaport. It is a sleepy town with a faded colonial charm and a town romantic ambience. Tanga was the starting point for ivory caravans venturing into the interior. It has some remarkable colonial architecture, and an old German built clock tower.

Day 4 – May 17: Enjoy the sunrise on the beach with a swim in the ocean or the pool. Breakfast is served from 7:30 a.m. Depart at 8:30 a.m. on luxury coaches for a fascinating drive along the vibrant Kenyan South Coast to reach Mombasa in time for registration on the Great Migration Hash and the red dress run.
