Sandwiched between a dramatic 1,000-foot Rift Valley escarpment and a soda lake tinted pink with masses of flamingos, Manyara is one of the most beautiful parks in Africa. A remarkable diversity of microhabitats support an extraordinary abundance of animals in an area of only 125 square miles.

The park’s most famous attraction is undoubtedly its tree climbing lions. Lions are heavy animals- adult females weigh about 250 pounds-hardly suited to an arboreal life. Yet the Manyara lions typically scale trees for postmeal cat naps. No one is sure why. The most commonly advanced theory asserts that they climb to avoid biting flies, but it is equally possible that they simply like the view or are trying to catch cooling breezes. The big animals certainly look silly draped precariously among the acacias, with legs and oversized paws dangling in the air. When their bellies are bloated with feasting, they look decidedly uncomfortable. Tree climbing is not unique to Manyara, but it is the most accessible place where lions regularly take to the air.
