Central Province – 5 days
Queen Elizabeth was a young and beautiful princess when she went with her husband, Prince Philip, to visit Kenya. She spent the night at the famed Treetops hotel in Nyeri. During the night, her father passed. She received the news of her father’s death, and although she went to bed a princess, she woke up a Queen.
Nyeri is the queen of Kenya, both culturally and ecologically. With the exception of the Maasai mara, no other location encapsulates so much history, culture and wildlife. This five day safari shows you the beautiful landscape of historic Central Province. Central Province is the home of the Mau Mau resistance which gained Kenya its independence, as well as the birthplace of Jomo Kenyatta, the first President of Kenya. Most importantly however, Central Province boasts the lush Aberdare National Park as well as the majestic Mount Kenya.
The Aberdare National Park-lushly covered with thick forest vegetation– is home to elephants, the black rhino, the giant forest hog, the cape buffalo, and various species of forest birds. Subject to availability, you can spend time at the Treetops or the Ark, which are tree hotels which provide prime viewing of wildlife in a luxury setting.
From this staging area, guests will go on a safari in the Mount Kenya region. Mount Kenya is Kenya’s highest mountain and the second highest mountain in Africa, reaching heights of 17,058 ft. (5199 m). Wildlife within the forests below the park boundary includes elephant, buffalo, lion, several species of antelope including the rare bongo and occasionally the leopard and the serval.
Note: For the adventurous, we can arrange a non-technical hike up part of the mountain. Mountain climbers should appreciate the need for acclimatisation over several days before attempting the high peaks. Serious climbers may seek advice from the Mountain Club of Kenya.
